Subject: Urgent Vaurien Championship 2003
Dear Dieter,
Hereby i send you a message about the organisation of the Vaurien World
Championship 2003 in Stavoren and would ask your opinion about the following
question;
As you know we organize the championship on the IJsselmeer and the organizing
committee will be the Koninklijke Watersportvereniging Sneek. At this
moment the organisation is on schedule and looking well.
Now we have the possibility to combine the Vaurien World
Championship with the World Championship of the Splash. The Splash is
also a dinghy but single-handed and the people who sale this ship are
in the same age and have the same spirit as the Vaurien sailors.
Our idée is to organize a combined championship, with two courses on
the water and two starting committees so the different classes
wouldn’t meet each other during the races. And one thing is very
clear; the most important thing during the races will be the safety of
the sailors. We try to get one rescue boat for every 10 competing
boats (exclusive coach-boats).
On land we will combine the event, of course with all traditional things
of both classes. Each of the classes will have the possibility to join
the championship with the same number of competitors, and this number
will not be less as normal for the Vaurien.
The reason that we will combine the championship is that this gives the
possibility to organize a big sailing event and give a big impuls to dinghy
sailing for non-professionals. We have the opinion that this will give
real good possibilities to promote the non-professional sailing sport
and the Vaurien. And a real important thing is that this combined championship
have more chances to get support from the government and sponsors and
will have big interest of the media. We will get the best out of two
classes and give the promotion of the Vaurien a new impuls. I think
this is a possibility for the Vaurien to show the world and other
classes what the spirit and the possibilities of the class are and to
bring our Vaurien-sailors an event that they never will forget.
So this is the situation and my opinion, the problem is that I have
to tell the Splash-class organisation at last April 30th whether we
will organize a combined championship or not. I think it is in best
interest for the Vaurien to say yes. But I am interested in your
opinion as chairman of the C.I.V. Please tell me your opinion before
April 26th.
